# Should You Run Your Pool Pump During a Freeze? Yes. Here Is the Physics.
The advice online contradicts itself. One page says run the pump below 40 degrees, another says 34, another says only below freezing. One says full speed, another says any speed. And every winter, somebody shuts the whole system down "to be safe" and finds a cracked pump housing in the spring.
I build gunite pools for a living. Here is the adjudicated answer.
Run it. All night. Through the whole event.
Moving water does not freeze inside your pipes and equipment. Still water does. The freeze events that destroy pool equipment across the South are not mysteries: the water stopped moving, the temperature stayed down, and ice expanded inside a pump volute or a filter tank with nowhere to go.
Start the pump before the freeze arrives and run it continuously until air temperatures hold above freezing. Set it manually. Freeze sensors fail, and a sensor that fails stays off. Manual on does not.
What speed on a variable speed pump?
Higher than your quietest overnight setting, but you do not need full power. The practical answer: any speed that produces strong, visible flow at every return is moving far more water than a freeze can fight. Even low VS speeds move thousands of gallons an hour. The danger is not slow water. It is still water, which brings us to the real trap.
Dead legs are what freeze
The line that bursts is usually the one nothing was flowing through: a spa line with the valve closed, a water feature that was off, a cleaner booster line, a solar line that was isolated. Tonight, open the valves and confirm flow through every line you own. Spa, waterfall, sheer descents, bubblers, deck jets, slide, cleaner booster. Every feature with its own pump runs too. A feature that cannot circulate gets drained instead, because water sitting still in a feature pump cracks it exactly like the main pump.
The one exception: shutting down correctly
Shutting down is a valid strategy only if you finish the job: breaker off, drain plugs pulled on the pump, filter, and heater, pump lid off, valves open. That is a drain down, and it works. What destroys equipment is the half version, flipping the system off and walking away with everything still full of water.
If the power goes out
This is the scenario the shut down drill exists for, because a pump without power is a pot of still water outdoors. Breaker off so it does not restart unattended, pull the drain plugs on pump, filter, and heater, pump lid off, then cover the drained equipment. Restart after the thaw: plugs back in, lid on, prime, and inspect every union for weeping.
Two quick myths
Salt pools barely help: typical salt levels lower the freezing point by a fraction of a degree. And ice skimming the pool surface is not the emergency, leave it alone and never chip ice near tile or skimmers. The surface sheet is not the danger. The line you shut off to be safe is.
